SCOPE


 


This position is a senior leader within the IS Department with the corporate responsibility of managing data as an asset. This leader will report directly to the CIO. The individual has accountability for managing the strategic direction for all of PetSmart’s corporate data assets and leveraging these assets to drive ongoing business value. The ideal candidate establishes strong relationships with business partners, IS Management, and vendors to design and deliver an enterprise data strategy that aligns to PetSmart’s goals and objectives and enables PetSmart to become world-class in the use of information for process improvements and decision making.


 


The Director, Data Management will serve as the leader of the IS Data Team consisting of approximately 25-30 PetSmart associates and 5-10 contractor resources.   The IS Data team is composed of the Business Intelligence (BI) team, Data Integration and Architecture team, Data Services team and Database Administrators (DBA).  Directly supervises three managers who lead the BI, Data Integration and Architecture team, Data Services team and three DBA’s.


 


This executive will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and developing employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


 


 


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


 



  • Partners with business leaders to establish execute, and deliver the corporate strategy of maximizing opportunities to utilize PetSmart’s data assets to drive business value. Promotes use of information technology that enables the work force to use information as a competitive tool.


 



  • Assesses and documents PetSmart’s current data environment; identifies strengths, risks, and opportunities.  This includes the needs of all company stakeholders (internal and external).


 



  • Responsible for the creation of the data management strategy for PetSmart.  Takes ownership of the Data Management strategy, from building the team, to the program plan to implement, to the delivery of project objectives, and ultimate delivery of value for the company.


 



  • Provides corporate leadership, vision, and direction for all of PetSmart’s data assets (Data Warehouse, Data Integration tools, Operational Data Stores, Data Marts, etc…) in support of the enterprise’s business objectives and requirements.


 



  • Establishes PetSmart’s corporate data model and ensures the accurate and timely integration and flow of data between enterprise transactional applications. Applications include but are not limited to  SAP, POS, Distribution Center solutions & Transportation systems, Data Warehouse, Time and Attendance & Labor Scheduling, Human Resources, Customer Relationship Marketing, .COM, etc.


 



  • Ensures the development of and compliance with enterprise-wide standards for the Data Warehouse and integration of PetSmart data. 


 



  • Ensures that the integrity of data is appropriate to support the data management strategy of the company.


 



  • As a member of the IS Leadership Team, provides broad leadership to the entire IS department to drive ongoing improvements and ensure value creation for PetSmart.


 



  • Leads and supervises the IS data organization to ensure continual improvements through performance management and associate development.


 



  • Ensures all IS solutions are aligned with corporate business and financial goals.


 



  • Builds strong partnerships with vendors and influences their strategic direction and timing of solutions to meet the strategic and tactical needs of PetSmart.


 



  • Participates in PetSmart’s Data Privacy Board to establish the strategic direction for securing and using sensitive data in PetSmart’s business activities.  Leads remediation actions as required to protect the PetSmart brand.


 



  • Manages budget for the IS Data organizations and assists in developing financial roadmap and budget for the entire IS department.


 


 



  • Responsible for investigating, designing, and deploying projects in support of the business and financial goals of the organization.


 



  • Ensures all initiatives for the Data Management team are aligned with the company’s vision, governing business strategies, and current business priorities.  Develops strategic direction and establishes appropriate priorities for projects critical to success.


 



  • Assesses organizational and operational effectiveness and recommends enhancements that will improve operating processes and performance.


 



  • Identifies and facilitates teams responsible for driving specific strategic and tactical initiatives.  Through effective utilization of process review, determines best practices and guides implementation of enhanced business processes.


 



  • Serves as operational hub for the leveraging of data to bring together ideas and people to diagnose problems, constructs best solutions, ensures buy-in, and delivers results.  Effectively engages all key associates in the delivery of business value.


 



  • Ensures effective communication of all key initiatives to ensure consistent understanding of the reasons for, direction of, and expected results of each project.


 



  • Acts as focal point for progress reporting on key initiatives and provides timely updates/presentations.


 



  • Drives the continued development of standards of measurement and metrics for the Data Management organization.  Leads the development of product/project specific metrics.


 



  • Develops and evaluates cost saving initiatives and their application to Data Management.


 



  • Advocates the utilization of process and technology improvements in order to minimize administrative inefficiencies and maximize productivity.


 



  • Serve as a visible presence and continuous influence for strategic change and operational excellence across the organization. Interacts up and down, as well as across, the organization to champion a consistent case for continuous improvement resulting in ongoing benefits for the company.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE


 


Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field; or equivalent work experience.  A minimum of 10 years’ business/industry work experience, with at least 3 years’ of leadership experience in managing multiple, large, cross-function teams and projects, and influencing senior level management and key stakeholders.
